Personal Landscapes - Online Live Workshops

Slow Stitched Textile Landscape in earthy colours Rebekah Johnston

Personal Landscapes – Evoking Place Through Textile Art

Landscapes are more than just scenery—they hold memories, emotions, and a sense of belonging. In this workshop, we’ll explore how to translate not just what we see, but what we feel, into textile art. Through fabric and stitch, you’ll create a personal landscape that captures the essence of a place, whether real or imagined.

What began as informal sketches for a larger wall hanging soon became a creative practice in its own right—these miniature studies offering just as much joy and meaning as the finished pieces they inspired.

We’ll begin with a short talk, where I’ll share examples of my work and introduce key principles of landscape composition. I’ll then guide you through my process, demonstrating how to build a composition using scrap fabrics and stitched details to bring depth and personality to your work. With plenty of time to experiment, stitch, and ask questions, this session is all about playful exploration and creative expression.

In This Workshop, You’ll Learn How To:

  • Create small textile collages as standalone artworks or studies for larger pieces.

  • Translate a photograph into a striking textile composition.

  • Crop and compose for balance and visual impact.

  • Use tonal values and atmospheric perspective to create depth.

  • Explore negative space and how colours can advance or recede.

  • Add stitched lines to suggest texture, distance, and movement.

  • Mount your finished piece onto card for a polished display.

Whether you’re new to textile art or looking to expand your practice, this workshop is an opportunity to slow down, stitch mindfully, and discover the joy of capturing landscapes through fabric and thread. I’d love for you to join me!
