ABOUT THE ARTIST
I'm Rebekah Johnston, a textile artist and educator living and working in Nottingham. I create one-off quilted textiles exploring themes of emotional wellbeing. Each piece is slow-stitched by hand, a calming and meditative process.
A quilt is an object that offers comfort and protection- just as the act of making it comforts and protects me. A soft fabric hug that connects me to its eventual recipient; fabrics with memories that are passed on to create new ones.
My passion lies in empowering people to find their own creative voice, encouraging them to grow the confidence to know their own visual language. As a former art teacher, I bring years of experience in guiding others through their artistic journeys.
My art intertwines artistic self-discovery, sustainability, and the meditative practice of hand stitching. Embracing the unhurried rhythm of my craft, I find solace and introspection in the deliberate act of slow stitching, allowing my thoughts to settle and reflect. My inspiration stems from discarded scraps and garment offcuts, which I transform into quilts and wall hangings. With meticulous attention, I piece together unconventional shapes, balancing positive and negative space to create harmonious compositions. Each shape is thoughtfully placed, resulting in a new visual arrangement that tells hidden narratives.
In addition to creating my own pieces, I love teaching others the art of slow stitch through in-person workshops. These workshops provide a space for participants to slow down, unwind, and immerse themselves in the joy of creating something beautiful with their own hands. Through my workshops, I extend an invitation for others to experience the same meditative calm and self-reflection. I encourage participants to embrace slowness, appreciate the beauty in discarded materials, and foster a mindful connection between their hands, mind, and creative spirit.
