Hi, I'm Rebekah Johnston

textile artist and educator Nottingham

I create one-off quilted textiles exploring themes of emotional wellbeing. Each piece is slow-stitched by hand, a calming and meditative process.

A quilt is an object that offers comfort and protection- just as the act of making it comforts and protects me. A soft fabric hug that connects me to its eventual recipient; fabrics with memories that are passed on to create new ones.

My passion lies in empowering people to find their own creative voice, encouraging them to grow the confidence to know their own visual language. As a former art teacher, I bring years of experience in guiding others through their artistic journeys.

“Collaborating with Rebekah provided a valuable opportunity for us to share our research in a tactile, visual and accessible way. The process of crafting the exhibition brief, and discussing our research with Rebekah helped us to further reflect upon and articulate our own personal responses to the stories and the crucial messages we sought to convey.

We really valued Rebekah’s sensitivity and thoughtful approach, evident from the initial concept development to the final creation of the quilts. Every aspect, from the selection of fabrics and the use of natural, home-based dyes, to the overall design and different stitching techniques was meticulously considered. Rebekah’s own reflections on the process of creating the quilts and the ‘behind the scenes’ insight into her design approach offer an additional layer of understanding. In this way, Rebekah’s quilts, paired with their accompanying descriptions, offer a textured, tangible way into our research and the realities of everyday life for families living with housing insecurity.”
